This unique natural phenomenon of pink lakes in Western Australia is out of the world. The beautiful clear blue sky contrasting with the pink lake looks breathtaking.

The famous pink lakes in western Australia are Lake Hillier, Hutt Lagoon, and Lake Warden. Additionally, there are a few pink lagoons in Victoria and South Australia.

Why are Lakes Pink in Australia

Many factors regulate and determine Australia’s great pink lakes. The excess quantity of salt in the lake is one reason the lakes are pink. Halobacteria and algae named Dunaliella Salina mix with salt water during hot days to turn it into a bright pink lake.

Best Time to Visit Australia’s Pink Lakes

Most of the pink lakes in Australia change their colour throughout the day and a few times a year. The lakes only turn pink when the climatic condition is favourable. The pink lake colour is temporary and changes from pastel to bubblegum colour.

During summers, there is less cloud coverage, and the intense Australian sun makes the lake’s colour much lower than in the winter. Thus, visiting Australia’s pink lakes during the summer is advisable.

Pink Lakes in Western Australia

The pink lakes in western Australia are Lake Hiller, Hutt Lagoon, Lake Warden and Quairading  Pink Lake.

1. Lake Hillier

Lake Hillier | The mystery of the pink lake

Undoubtedly, Lake Hillier is one of the most popular lakes under the pink lake in western Australia. It is located on the middle island of West Australia and remains pink year-round.

However, this pink lake is quite hard to access since it is difficult for tourists to get to the 6 km long island, and also, the pink lake can only be viewed by boat or a scenic flight. The tourists are restricted from swimming in the pink salt lake due to the high amount of salt in the water, which makes it risky if the tourists have any cuts on their bodies.

2. Hutt Lagoon

The following famous Western Australia pink lake is the Hutt Lagoon. The lake is one of Western Australia’s iconic attractions for tourists. The Hutt Lagoon is famous and known for being the world’s largest production site of microalgae.

The colour of the pink Hutt Lagoon lake is due to an algae production that produces beta-carotene. If you don’t know what beta carotene is, it is a natural food colouring agent. This raw food dye makes various cosmetic products, supplements, and medicines.

The salt levels of the Hutt Lagoon pink lake are incredibly high. Hard salt crystals cover the bottom of the salt lake. A long six-hour drive from Perth through the Indian Ocean highway will bring you to the Hutt Lagoon pink lake. However, if you want to view the Hutt Lagoon from above, there is a scenic flight from Geraldton to Hutt Lagoon pink lake.

A two-hour road trip from Perth is the Quairading Pink Lake. The exceptional beauty of this lake is that the road drive is right in the middle of the Quarading Pink Lake.

One side of the lake is dusky pink in colour, whereas the other side of the lake is blue or magenta, depending on the climatic conditions and the time of year you visit.
