Things to Keep in Mind While Changing Your LinkedIn URL

  • The custom URL should be a minimum of 3 characters and a maximum of 100 characters long. It also should not contain the word ‘LinkedIn’ or any spaces, symbols, or special characters.
  • The customizable part is not case sensitive, so whether it is taylorswift or TaylorSwift, it will take you to the same profile and form the same URL.
  • You should choose a custom public profile URL that is available.
  • LinkedIn allows you to change your profile URL only five times in six months.
  • Your public profile URL, which is assigned by default with random letters and numbers when a LinkedIn profile is created, is not getting changed. To change that, you need to edit your name.

If you have a business/professional account, it is recommended to mention your professional brand in the URL, which will make it easier for people to find and approach you. Many job applications may also ask for your profile URL, therefore, keeping a crisp and unique URL is important.

Even if you change your custom public profile URL, the previous URL remains linked to your profile. You can unlink it if you want. The old URL remains linked for six months. If you think you have made a mistake and want to go back from your new URL, just revert it.

LinkedIn only inserts a language field, like ‘fr’ for French, at the end of the public profile URL for LinkedIn users who have profiles in multiple languages. Upon entering a previously claimed URL, you get directed to a “Profile Not Found” page. LinkedIn doesn’t create any custom public profile URLs upon any appeal, therefore you should choose a custom public profile URL that is available.

Why is it Recommended to Have a Customized LinkedIn URL?

A polished professional brand profile is very important to attract recruiters. These days, only resumes don’t do much. A professional brand profile with a customized public web address is much easier to find than a web address with random letters and numbers. With a personalized URL, you will be able to stand out from the crowd.

A new custom URL also points out that you are a detail-oriented person, and are putting your best foot forward. Sometimes, you also may need to include your URL in your email signature, business card, resume or other places. At that time, a weird URL with all the random characters will be meh. Therefore, it is highly recommended to customize your LinkedIn URL.

How to Make the Best Customized LinkedIn URL

The best custom URL can be made using your name. If you already have a website with your name, you can also use that for customizing your LinkedIn account. This will cut you some slack from thinking of anything too complicated. If the account is for business purposes, combining your name and any relevant keyword will make the best-customized URL. This always indicates that the personal brand has been taken seriously.
