The phrase ‘the tip of the iceberg’ reminds us that what first catches the eye is often only a small part of a much richer story. That doesn’t mean the visible part isn’t beautiful, because it absolutely is. It just means there’s more waiting beneath the tip for anyone with the patience to go looking.

Sydney is the perfect embodiment of that idea. Visitors are naturally drawn to the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, Bondi Beach and the glittering harbour, and fair enough, because it would honestly be a crime not to be. But beyond the obvious, Sydney is also hiding underrated gems that most people, even locals, don’t know exist. That’s exactly why this blog exists. It dives into the best things to do in Sydney, the popular and the lesser-known ones. Let’s get into it…

The Crowd Favourites

Sydney Harbour Dinner Cruises

Dinner cruises in Sydney prove that being popular is not synonymous with being overrated. If you get aboard a Sydney harbour dinner cruise, it is easy to see why it got the ‘popular’ tag. It is one of the best and easiest ways in which you can get acquainted with the ‘Harbour City’. From a luxury boat, you’ll get the panoramic views of the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Luna Park and the lustrous Sydney skyline.

And, of course, these cruises stay true to the ‘dinner’ part too, with deluxe menus featuring both Australian and international cuisine. Whether you prefer a buffet, a seated-and-served dinner, live entertainment or a cruise aboard a catamaran, glass boat, paddlewheeler or tall ship, Sydney has got it all!

Harbour Bridge Climb

If you didn’t know, yes, you can climb the Harbour Bridge! BridgeClimb Sydney offers guided climbs to the summit of Australia’s most famous bridge, which is roughly 134 metres high. The climbs run throughout the day, including daytime, twilight and night sessions. While twilight climbs are often considered the most spectacular, each time slot offers a unique perspective of the city.

Before the climb, you’ll receive a full safety briefing and be fitted with specialised climbing gear. Experienced guides accompany you throughout the journey, which makes it suitable even for many first-time climbers. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360° views of Sydney Harbour.

Bondi to Coogee Walk

Bondi isn’t just famous with travellers, it’s also a favourite among celebrities. Well-known names such as Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth and Russell Crowe have all been spotted here. But to truly experience the coastline, do the Bondi to Coogee Walk! It is a 6km coastal cliff walk that starts at Bondi Beach and then passes through beaches such as Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordon’s Bay. The end stop is Coogee Beach. Along the way, you can stop for swimming at a rock pool, take up surfing at any beach or explore the numerous cafes.

The Hidden Gems

Kamay Botany Bay National Park

Before Sydney became Australia’s largest city, this coastline witnessed the country’s defining historical moment. Kamay Botany Bay National Park preserves the place where Lieutenant James Cook first landed in 1770, while also recognising tens of thousands of years of continuous Aboriginal connection to the country.

The Kurnell section of the park is home to the Captain Cook plaque & obelisk, commemorating the crew’s landing. The nearby Burrawang Walk, an accessible clifftop boardwalk leads to spectacular views across Botany Bay. Visitors interested in Aboriginal heritage can also explore the area’s interpretive displays, which share the cultural significance of Kamay (Botany Bay) for the Dharawal people. Another highlight is Cape Solander, one of Sydney’s best whale-watching locations during the annual migration season.

Badu Mangroves

Badu Mangroves is yet another hidden gem located inside the Sydney Olympic Park. It is proof that Sydney still has wilderness hiding in plain sight. The Badu Mangroves winds through the largest remaining grey mangrove forest on the Parramatta River. Elevated pathways allow you to explore delicate wetlands without disturbing the ecosystem, which also makes it an ideal spot for birdwatching, photography or simply enjoying a quieter side of Sydney.

The surrounding wetlands also have native fish, crabs and numerous waterbird species, while interpretive signs explain the ecological importance of these protected habitats. The boardwalk also features the ‘Dreaming Track’ poem, celebrating the enduring connection of First Nations peoples to this landscape.

Between the icons and the in-the-know spots, here it is: a Sydney itinerary that earns its keep. Book the harbour dinner cruise for the night you want guaranteed magic, save an afternoon for the mangroves when you want a wilderness escape, and let the rest sort itself out!
